Fortaleza’s Subway

🚇 Fortaleza’s subway: A Hidden Gem Right Next to Refúgio Hostel

Planning to explore Fortaleza but worried about transport? We’ve got some great news: Fortaleza has a subway system! That’s right — and it works better than many people expect. The best part? The future Colégio Militar station will be just 850 metres from Refúgio Hostel FortalezaRefúgio Pousada Fortaleza. Sounds like a win, doesn’t it?

Yes, Fortaleza has a subway – and it’s expanding

Many travellers don’t realise that Fortaleza already has a modern subway system. Since 2012, electric and light rail trains have been operating across several lines, connecting key areas of the city.

Currently, three lines are running:

  • Linha Sul = South (Linha 1 Vermelha=Red): The main subway line, linking the city centre with areas like Maracanaú.

  • VLT Oeste = West (Linha 2 Verde = Green): A diesel-powered train line that heads towards Caucaia. Perfect if you’re planning a trip to Cumbuco beach.

  • VLT Parangaba–Mucuripe (Linha 3 Azul = Blue): A light rail tram line that goes from inland to the port area — great for reaching the Fish Market or the seaside.

The system connects smoothly with bus terminals and uses an electronic card for easy integration. Moreover, the trains are air-conditioned and usually more comfortable than city buses.

🚧 The East Line is coming – and it’s coming close to the Refúgios

The newest and most exciting addition to Fortaleza’s subway network is the Linha Leste = East (Linha 4 Amarela = Yellow). It’s currently under construction and will become the first fully underground line in Brazil’s Northeast.

And here’s the exciting bit: the new Colégio Militar station will be only 850 metres from Refúgio Hostel! That’s just about a 10-minute walk, meaning you’ll have a subway station practically next door. 🙌

What makes this new subway line so special?

The East Line will link the city centre (Chico da Silva station) with the Papicu area, stretching over 7,3 kilometres and featuring five stations. In May 2025, the tunnel-boring machine (nicknamed “Tatuzão”) completed the first tunnel, reaching Colégio Militar station.

This milestone brings the line one step closer to reality — and puts the two Refúgios in a top location for smart travellers.

How will the subway benefit your stay at Refúgio?

That’s the big question, isn’t it? So here are the top advantages our guests will enjoy once the East Line is operating:

  • Faster journeys: You’ll reach the Papicu transport hub in just 15 minutes. From there, it’s easy to access malls or Praia do Futuro.

  • Seamless integration: The new line connects with buses and other subway lines. That means you can go almost anywhere — beach, markets, museums — without the stress of traffic.

  • Perfect for night-outs: Going out in a different part of the town? You’ll be able to ride the subway back and walk safely to the Refúgios. No need for pricey taxis.

  • Comfort and savings: Trains are clean, cool and affordable. Great for solo or budget-conscious travellers.

🚶‍♀️ And if you prefer walking – no worries!

One of Refúgio’s biggest perks is its super central location. Even without the subway, you’re close to many of Fortaleza’s must-see spots:

  • Beira-Mar Promenade – beach bars, artisan market and great views – 15 min.

  • Praia de Iracema – historic charm and a popular nightlife scene – 15 min.

  • Dragão do Mar Cultural Centre – museums, live music, cafés and more – 5 min.

  • Mercado Central, perfect to buy some souvenirs and some craftwork – 5 min.

And soon, the subway will extend your reach even further — without leaving your comfort zone.
